What shade suits a column lamp?

Tall, slender columns generally take drum or empire shades that match the verticality of the base without overwhelming the proportions. Fabric shades with subtle pleating or neutral linings help diffuse light evenly across a room. Heavier marble or bronze bases can support slightly wider, more structured shades to balance the substantial weight at the bottom. Proportions remain key, ensuring the shade diameter does not obscure the decorative capital of the column.

How do I clean brass and silver plate?

Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth prevents grime accumulation in the recessed fluting of a column lamp. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip away remaining patination or thin silver plating layers. Gentle cleaning with specialist metal creams used sparingly maintains the historic shine without exposing raw base metals. Preserving the dark shadows in crevices often enhances the perceived depth of the cast ornamentation.

Can I date a lamp by its base?

Base construction and mounting styles offer strong clues to a lamp's period, from heavy stepped marble plinths in Art Deco pieces to ornate cast brass stepped bases in Victorian designs. Threading types and the presence of converted oil burner mechanisms also point towards specific manufacturing decades. Makers often adapted nineteenth-century candlesticks for electricity later on, meaning the electrical conversion date differs from the manufacture of the metalwork itself. Examining the underside reveals fixings and weighting materials characteristic of different eras.
