How do I tell an original Georgian chair from a revival piece?

Original 18th-century chairs show period timber shrinkage, hand-cut joinery marks, and authentic wear patterns beneath the finish. Revival pieces from the Victorian and Edwardian eras often use standardised machine-cut components and different secondary woods. Examination of the underside and structural joints reveals the age of the glue and the method of construction used by the cabinetmaker.

What is a Gainsborough chair used for?

These wide upholstered armchairs served primarily as comfortable seating for writing desks, libraries, and reading rooms. Their generous proportions accommodated the heavy clothing of the period. Today they function effectively as desk chairs or occasional seating in living spaces where comfort meets formal style.

How should I care for antique leather upholstery?

Historic leather requires gentle cleaning with appropriate saddle soaps and regular application of conservation-grade leather balms to prevent cracking. Avoiding direct sunlight and extreme heat sources protects the hide from drying out. Preserving the original hand-dyed finish maintains the historic character and visual depth of the leather.

Are these dining chairs suitable for daily use?

Solid mahogany construction and sturdy mortise-and-tenon joints make these chairs structurally robust for everyday dining. Checking that the corner blocks and leg joints remain tight ensures they handle regular weight safely. Upholstered drop-in seats can also be recovered easily in modern fabrics if required for contemporary domestic interiors.
