What tools come with a companion set?

Companion sets typically include tongs for moving burning fuel, a poker for adjusting logs or coal, and a shovel for clearing ash. Additional items like fire dogs or Fenders sometimes accompany these tool collections. These pieces usually hang on a dedicated stand or rest near the hearth together as a functional unit.

How do I date Victorian fire tools?

Dating relies on stylistic markers, material combinations, and documented periods ranging through the nineteenth century. Victorian examples frequently combine bright brass handles with strong steel shafts. Specific design motifs like starburst patterns or rope twists help narrow the production era closer to the mid or late nineteenth century.

Are brass fire tools strong enough to use?

Most vintage fireplace tools combine a brass decorative element with an inner core or working end of steel or iron. This construction gives them the structural strength required for lifting coal and adjusting logs. Careful handling ensures these historic implements remain functional around a modern fireplace.

What is the difference between Edwardian and Victorian sets?

Victorian fireplace tools often feature heavier construction, elaborate casting, and distinct decorative elements like starbursts or heavy rope twist handles. Edwardian sets, dating into the early twentieth century, lean towards lighter proportions and refined companion arrangements. Both periods utilise brass and steel effectively, but the overall aesthetic shifts from heavy Victorian display to slightly more streamlined Edwardian utility.
