What is a pricket candlestick?

A pricket candlestick uses a sharp metal spike rather than a socket to hold the candle in place. This traditional ecclesiastical design allows wide candles to sit securely on a flat drip pan. Such pieces are frequently found among nineteenth-century church metalwork and require specialised candles with pierced bases or deep drip protection.

How tall do church candlesticks get?

Church candlesticks range from modest table altar pieces to commanding floor-standing holders measuring several feet in height. Tall examples were designed to stand directly on sanctuary floors or large altar tables to provide elevated light. Graduated sets of three or four pieces were also produced for ecclesiastical settings to create tiered visual displays during services.

Are these candlesticks electrified?

Many surviving examples retain their original configuration for wax candles, while others have been converted into table lamps over time. Conversions often utilise the hollow interior of the brass column to house electrical wiring. Buyers can find both unadapted pricket forms and period altar lamps fitted for modern domestic lighting within the evidence.

What materials are used besides brass?

While brass forms the primary material, workshops frequently incorporated bronze, wrought iron, cast iron, wood, glass and enamel accents. Multi-material constructions appear particularly in Amsterdam School and gothic revival designs. These mixed-media pairings provide structural contrast and decorative richness to the heavy metal columns and bases.
