How do I choose the right size fixture?

Consider the dimensions of the room and the height of the ceiling when selecting a hanging light. Larger multi-arm chandeliers require adequate clearance and floor space to balance the visual weight. Compact pendants and flush plafonniers suit rooms with lower ceilings or restricted vertical space where a hanging drop would obstruct movement.

Are these fixtures wired for modern use?

Most antique and vintage lighting requires inspection and rewiring by a qualified electrician to comply with current safety standards. Original brass fittings can usually accommodate modern internal wiring. Components like lampholders are often updated during restoration while preserving the exterior metal and glass structure.

How do I clean crystal and brass?

Dust the brass frame gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can strip antique patination. Crystal lustres and glass shades can be removed and washed in warm soapy water. Dry all glass components thoroughly before reattaching them to the metal framework with their original pins.

What is the difference between an Edwardian and Art Deco light?

Edwardian fixtures typically draw on classical revival styles, featuring cut glass, ornate brass casting, and traditional candle-arm configurations. They often reflect lighter, more delicate proportions than heavy Victorian pieces. Art Deco lights embrace geometric forms, slip shades, and streamlined metalwork, representing a shift towards modern industrial and decorative design in the 1930s.
