What is a vintage bedroom side cupboard?

A compact storage unit designed to sit beside a bed for holding personal items and a lamp. These pieces date from the Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco periods. They combine enclosed shelving or drawers with a convenient top surface, utilising timbers like mahogany, walnut, and satinwood.

Are bedside cupboards usually found in pairs?

Many examples on this page are offered as matching pairs, particularly those dating from the nineteen-twenties and nineteen-thirties. Single items also appear from earlier Victorian and Edwardian periods. Matching pairs are especially valued for symmetrical bedroom layouts.

What styles are common in these cabinets?

Styles range from straightforward Edwardian mahogany designs to geometric Art Deco walnut pieces and ornate French marble-topped cabinets. Revival styles such as Louis XVI and Sheraton are also represented. Each style reflects the prevailing aesthetic of its decade of manufacture.

How do I maintain wood and marble surfaces?

Solid woods and veneers benefit from occasional waxing with appropriate formulations to nourish the grain and protect the finish. Marble tops require simple wiping with a damp cloth and avoidance of acidic substances. Keeping pieces away from direct heat sources preserves the stability of the timber.
