What is a victorian t bar chain used for?

Originally, these chains secured pocket watches to waistcoats by anchoring the T-bar through a buttonhole. The watch attached via the dog clip at the opposite end. Today, collectors and wearers repurpose these items as necklaces or wrap bracelets, utilising the secure fastenings and decorative links as standalone jewellery.

How do you wear a pocket watch chain as a necklace?

Shorter lengths and lighter gauges transition easily to the neck by fastening the dog clip directly to a jump ring or the T-bar itself. The T-bar often hangs as a decorative pendant drop at the front. Longer double chains can be doubled over or clasped to create a layered effect around the neck.

What is the difference between silver and rolled gold chains?

Sterling silver chains consist entirely of silver, frequently bearing hallmarks indicating the assay office and year of creation. These pieces often exhibit a bright metallic lustre or a darkened patina. Rolled gold chains feature a thin layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base metal core. This technique provided the appearance and durability of solid gold at a lower cost.

What are trombone and curb links?

Curb links feature interlocking, slightly flattened uniform links that lie relatively flat against the skin or fabric. This style offers maximum flexibility and strength. Trombone links combine elongated rectangular bars with small connecting rings, creating an architectural and varied geometric silhouette.
