Where were these paintings displayed originally?

These works hung primarily in nineteenth-century homes, country houses, and urban parlours where owners sought to bring the perceived tranquility of the countryside indoors. They served as decorative centrepieces that reflected contemporary tastes for pastoral scenery and animal portraiture.

How do I care for an oil painting?

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity to prevent the paint surface from cracking. Dust the frame and canvas gently with a dry, soft cloth without applying liquid cleaners or pressure to the paint.

What defines a pastoral landscape?

A pastoral landscape focuses on agricultural scenes, typically featuring shepherds, flocks, and grazing cattle within open rural or Highland settings. The style emphasises peaceful coexistence between humans, animals, and the natural environment.

Are these works signed by the artist?

Many examples bear the signature or initials of the painter, often placed discreetly in a lower corner of the canvas. Other pieces remain unsigned or are attributed to followers and circles of well-known nineteenth-century animal painters.
