What were victorian pine blanket boxes used for?

Households relied on these sturdy chests to store bulky woollen blankets, heavy winter bedding, and family linens in eras before built-in wardrobes became common. Travellers and mariners also utilised reinforced pine trunks for personal possessions during transit, trusting the robust timber and iron hardware to withstand difficult journeys.

How do I style a blanket box at home?

Position a low, flat-top chest at the foot of a bed to hold spare cushions and throws while providing a stable surface for seating or resting items. These versatile pieces also function effectively as living room coffee tables, offering concealed interior storage for magazines and clutter beneath a characterful waxed timber top.

How can I tell if the paint is original?

Original paint surfaces show natural wear, mellowed craquelure, and consistent layers of grime accumulated over generations of domestic use. Modern overpainting often feels flat, lacks authentic underlying patination, and conceals the natural grain texture of the pine beneath.

What is the difference between a trunk and a blanket box?

Blanket boxes generally feature flat tops and domestic construction geared towards stationary bedroom or landing storage. Trunks frequently incorporate heavier iron carrying handles, reinforced corners, and travel-oriented hardware designed for movement.
