What is a pot cupboard?

A pot cupboard is a small nineteenth-century bedside cabinet designed with an enclosed compartment to hide a chamber pot. They typically feature a single door and sometimes an internal shelf for storage. Over time, these practical bedroom pieces evolved into general bedside tables and lamp stands while keeping their enclosed storage space intact.

Are these cupboards sold in pairs?

Many nineteenth-century bedside cabinets appear as matched pairs, though single pieces also feature frequently. Pairs are particularly useful for placing on both sides of a bed. Finding matching pairs from the Victorian period can require patience, as they were often separated or produced in limited numbers.

What wood were they made from?

Cabinet makers built these pieces using a variety of woods including mahogany, walnut, burr walnut, rosewood, oak, and pine. Finer examples often displayed figured veneers and decorative inlays. Softer woods like pine were frequently painted or finished to match simpler bedroom suites, while hardwoods showcased natural grains.

Did they always have marble tops?

Marble tops were utilised on specific bedside cabinets to provide a durable, waterproof surface for washing equipment and water jugs. Not all models feature marble, as many relied on solid wood tops. Cabinets with marble tops are generally heavier and reflect a higher standard of bedroom furniture from the period.
