What defines a Victorian lounge chair?

These chairs combine deep seating with sprung upholstery, often finished in buttoned fabric or heavy ticking. They were built for domestic comfort in nineteenth-century drawing rooms. Their robust construction usually includes concealed or exposed wooden frames paired with brass castors for repositioning across heavy carpets.

How do I identify a country house style?

Country house seating prioritises comfort above rigid formality, resulting in generous proportions and soft, lived-in upholstery. They frequently appear in neutral linens or ticking. These pieces reflect generations of domestic use while retaining their original structural integrity and hardware.

What is a slipper chair?

A slipper chair is characterised by its low seat and absence of arms, making it distinct from standard armchairs. Originally designed for nineteenth-century dressing rooms, they offer compact yet deep seating. Button-backed versions are common among antique examples, often supported on turned wooden legs.

How should I care for upholstered Victorian chairs?

Protect antique textiles by avoiding direct sunlight and using gentle vacuum attachments to remove surface dust. The internal webbing and stuffing benefit from professional conservation rather than modern reupholstery when possible. Inspect the brass castors periodically to ensure smooth movement without straining the wooden leg joints.
