How do I assemble these beds?

Most pieces utilise iron slot-in frames that wedge together securely at the four corners without requiring complex mechanical fixings. Once the side rails lock into the headboard and footboard sockets, the structure gains total rigidity. After connecting the main chassis, attach any loose castors or decorative finials by hand. Modern standard mattresses fit neatly within the original side rail dimensions.

What sizes do these beds come in?

The inventory ranges from compact single and three-quarter frames to generous double, king, and super king sizes. Widths vary considerably according to the original period specification and intended room scale. Larger versions often feature extended headboards with reinforced iron footings to support heavier bedding. Smaller single and small double variants suit guest rooms or narrower spaces.

Are original castors always included?

Many frames retain their original metal or ceramic castors set into the base of each iron post. These small wheels facilitated movement for cleaning in nineteenth-century bedrooms. Replacements occasionally occur where original wheels suffered wear over generations of use. Inspecting the foot fixings reveals whether the ground clearance relies on original or modern hardware.

How do I care for brass and iron?

Painted iron surfaces require gentle dusting and occasional cleaning with a dry or barely damp cloth. Preserving the original paint finish avoids the need for aggressive chemical treatments. Brass components respond well to standard metal polish applied sparingly to avoid contact with adjacent iron. Unpolished aged brass develops a natural patina over decades of domestic use.
