What are mantel lustres used for?

Mantel lustres served as ornamental vessels placed upon fireplace mantelpieces during the Victorian period. Their hanging crystal prisms caught and reflected the flickering light of candles or oil lamps in the room. Beyond illumination, they functioned as high-status decorative objects that demonstrated the owner's taste for colourful, ornate Bohemian glass. Many pairs remained strictly for visual display in formal parlours.

How do I identify flash glass?

Flash glass is identified by examining the cut edges where a distinct outer layer of colour, such as ruby or blue, meets a clear or white interior base. The cutter ground through the superficial coloured layer to reveal the contrasting body underneath. This method created striking patterns without requiring the entire vessel to be made of expensive solid coloured glass. Under close inspection, the boundary between the two layers remains clear.

Are these pieces dishwasher safe?

These antique glass items require hand washing in lukewarm water with mild soap. The historic gilding, enamel painting, and delicate glass structures cannot withstand modern machine washing. Sudden temperature changes will crack nineteenth-century glass. Careful manual cleaning preserves the fragile gold leaf and enameled surfaces.

How do I spot Victorian pieces?

Victorian production is indicated by specific material combinations, such as cranberry flash glass, heavy crystal forms, and characteristic German Historismus styling. Look for ground pontil marks on the undersides of vases and decanters. Stylistic cues include hand-painted floral enamels, gilt scrolling, and polished facet cuts typical of nineteenth-century Bohemian workshops.
