What fits inside a bijouterie table?

Bijouterie tables suit small portable items such as pocket watches, medals, coins and delicate ceramics. The shallow glazed compartment keeps these pieces visible while protecting them from dust and handling. Items are arranged directly on the textile lining beneath the glass lid. This tabletop format allows closer inspection than wall-mounted or upright shelving units.

Where should a pier cabinet go?

Pier cabinets function best in narrow wall spaces, particularly the wall pier between two windows in a reception room. Their shallow depth ensures they do not obstruct movement in smaller rooms. Placing the cabinet away from direct sunlight protects both the timber finish and the interior textile lining from fading over time.

How do I care for the velvet lining?

Velvet linings require gentle maintenance to avoid crushing the pile or accumulating dust. A soft brush or low-suction vacuum attachment helps keep the fabric clean. Keep these cabinets in rooms with stable humidity levels to protect both the delicate textiles and the surrounding hardwood structure from warping.

How do I distinguish Victorian from Edwardian styles?

Victorian cabinets often employ dark figured walnut, heavy ormolu mounts and dense marquetry inlay. The overall aesthetic leans toward rich, formal presentation in reception spaces. Edwardian pieces generally present lighter mahogany frames, delicate stringing and Sheraton-influenced revival details. The lighter timbers reflect a shift toward airier interior schemes at the turn of the twentieth century.
