Are these lamps safe to use?

Most antique lamps have been rewired at some stage to meet modern electrical standards. It remains wise to have a qualified electrician inspect older wiring before plugging them in. Checking the plug and cord condition ensures that the historic base functions safely within a modern home.

How do I clean a gilded lamp?

Gilt surfaces require a very gentle touch to avoid wearing away the thin layer of gold leaf or ormolu. Dusting with a dry, soft microfibre cloth is generally sufficient for regular maintenance. Avoid chemical polishes and abrasive cleaners entirely, as they strip the historic finish and damage the underlying metal or wood.

Can I change the lampshades?

Lamp shades can indeed be updated to suit your personal interior scheme and desired level of light diffusion. Many period lamps look striking paired with contemporary silk or fabric shades. Ensuring the fitter matches the original harp or gallery size keeps the proportions balanced and secure.

How do I date a gilt lamp?

Dating relies on examining the casting techniques, the style of the mounts, and the materials used in the base. Nineteenth-century pieces often display hand-chased details that differ from later machine-made reproductions. Wear patterns on the gilding and the construction of the interior fittings also offer clues to the age of the object.
