How do I identify a Victorian door knocker?

Victorian door knockers often display heavier cast brass construction with elaborate motifs such as lion masks, bees, or Maltese dolphins. They frequently incorporate substantial backplates and striking plates. By contrast, earlier Georgian pieces tend to show more restrained classical proportions, while Edwardian examples often utilise bronze in simpler configurations.

Where were centre door knobs placed?

Centre door knobs are mounted directly in the middle of the exterior door face, serving as both an architectural focal point and a handle for pulling the door closed. They appear frequently across Victorian, Georgian, and Regency properties alongside traditional rim locks or latches.

What is a brass bell pull?

A brass bell pull is an exterior fixture connected by wire or crank to an interior mechanical bell, allowing visitors to signal residents before electric chimes. These mechanisms date predominantly through the Georgian and Victorian periods and require careful alignment with internal linkages.

How do I care for antique brass hardware?

Antique brass and bronze require gentle cleaning using non-abrasive cloths to preserve the existing patina and surface finish built up over decades. Avoid harsh chemical dips that strip the aged character from cast details like lion masks or bee hive knobs.
