How were table gongs used?

Dining gongs stood on side tables or surfaces in large homes to summon residents to meals. A mallet struck the suspended metal disc to produce a resonant tone. Over time, these gongs transitioned from practical household signals to decorative conversation pieces featuring bamboo or wooden frames.

What are ejector candlesticks?

Ejector candlesticks include an internal slide mechanism operated by a small side lever. This allowed users to remove leftover candle wax easily without damaging the metal. Such functional improvements help date specific pieces to the nineteenth century when domestic convenience drove design changes.

How do I clean antique brass?

Antique brass typically requires minimal intervention to preserve its aged appearance and dark highlights. Dusting with a soft cloth keeps the surface clean without stripping the character built over decades. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that remove patination and reduce the visual depth of cast details.

Are these items purely decorative?

Most of these pieces were made for everyday household use, from lighting rooms to displaying geographical knowledge on a desk. Candlesticks held tallow or wax candles, while globes provided educational reference. Today, they continue to function while serving as aesthetic focal points on tables and sideboards.
