How do I clean tortoiseshell and silver?

Wipe the tortoiseshell gently with a soft, damp cloth and dry immediately to preserve the natural lustre of the material. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and keep silver polishing pastes entirely away from the shell. Apply silver polish carefully to the metal mounts using a cotton bud, ensuring no residue reaches the adjoining shell surfaces. Store these items out of direct sunlight to prevent warping and fading.

Are these items made from real shell?

Victorian, Edwardian, and earlier pieces utilise genuine hawksbill sea turtle shell, prized for its translucent amber and dark brown mottled patterns. Later twentieth-century items occasionally incorporate early plastics or faux materials. Examining the underside and interior reveals the organic grain and natural warmth unique to authentic shell. Hallmarks on the accompanying silver mounts also help confirm the period of manufacture.

How do I date a trinket box?

Silver hallmarks stamped onto the metal mounts provide the most reliable date, indicating the assay office and year of assay. Maker's marks alongside these stamps further narrow down the production period. Stylistic indicators, such as heavy Edwardian capstan designs or geometric Art Deco lines, also point toward specific decades. Construction methods, including the type of interior lining and hinge style, offer additional clues.

Can I use a vintage inkwell today?

Desk accessories like capstan inkwells serve primarily as decorative desktop items rather than daily writers. Modern inks can react with antique glass inserts and delicate silver components. Displaying them on a desk or mantelpiece preserves their structural integrity while allowing you to enjoy the contrast of silver and shell. Ensure the hinged lids remain open occasionally to air the internal compartments.
