What is a three decanter frame set?

A three decanter frame set is a fitted housing holding three matching glass bottles for serving spirits. These pieces combine wooden or metal stands with matching crystal vessels. They function as both serving equipment and decorative furniture for dining rooms. Many include locking bars to secure the contents.

How do you use a locking tantalus?

A locking tantalus secures the decanter stoppers beneath a metal bar that fastens with a key. Turning the key releases the mechanism so the bar lifts to free the bottles. This design prevented household staff from accessing the liquor while allowing the homeowner to display fine spirits.

How do I date an antique frame set?

Dating relies on the materials, wood types, and manufacturing marks found on the silver-plated mounts. Victorian pieces often use heavy oak or exotic woods with ornate electroplated hardware. Later Edwardian and Art Deco examples shift toward simpler geometric frames or modernist chrome structures. Hallmarks on the metal parts provide precise production years.

Are the decanters original to the frame?

Checking originality involves inspecting whether the cut crystal patterns match across all three bottles and fit the frame slots precisely. Original decanters sit flush in the base and feature matching stoppers. Replacements often show slight variations in glass tint, weight, or cutting style compared to the original frame.
