What is a mule chest?

A mule chest is a traditional storage trunk that combines a lift-up lid on top with one or more functional drawers positioned underneath. This hybrid design emerged before the standard chest of drawers became common in every household. These pieces served to store bulky textiles in the top section while keeping smaller garments or linens accessible in the base drawers.

How old are these trunks?

The pieces available span from the seventeenth century through the Georgian and Victorian eras up to the nineteenth century. Most examples date from the eighteenth century. Construction details, timber choices, and regional styles help determine the approximate age of each individual trunk.

Where were these pieces made?

Many examples originate from English provincial workshops and Welsh regional makers using locally sourced timbers. Country vernacular pieces reflect the materials available in specific rural areas. Pine, oak, and elm dominate these regional workshops, producing sturdy furniture built for everyday domestic utility.

How do I care for an old pine trunk?

Maintain old pine and oak trunks by keeping them away from direct heat sources and sudden temperature fluctuations. This prevents the timber from drying out and cracking. Apply traditional wax polish occasionally to nourish the surface and preserve the historic finish of the wood.
