Who painted highland cattle on these vases?

Members of the Stinton family, principally Harry Stinton and John Stinton, painted these rural scenes for the manufacturer. Their work spans the early decades of the twentieth century. The artists specialised in pastoral depictions of cattle set against misty Scottish mountain backdrops.

How do I identify a genuine piece?

Genuine examples bear the factory backstamp of the manufacturer alongside the signature of the painter, usually reading H Stinton or John Stinton. The hand-painted enamel work should show distinct brushstrokes under magnification. Factory marks often include date ciphers that help pinpoint the exact year of production.

What shapes do these vases come in?

The pieces appear in numerous forms including trumpet vases, twin-handled urns, ewers, and pot pourri vessels with pierced covers. Spill vases designed for narrow spaces also feature frequently. Each ceramic shape provides a different framing for the continuous landscape paintings.

How should I display my vase?

Place the vessel away from direct sunlight to protect the enamel colours and gilt highlights from fading over time. Position it where adequate ambient light allows the detail of the landscape to be appreciated. Ensure the surface is stable and free from vibration to protect the fragile porcelain form.
