What is a standing mahogany paper holder?

It is a functional piece of furniture designed to hold papers, magazines, music sheets or folios upright and within reach. Common historic forms include canuteries, magazine racks and folio stands. Most examples seen here date from the Georgian, Regency, Victorian and Edwardian eras, combining mahogany with brass details and compartmented storage.

Where were they used in the home?

These pieces sat in libraries, drawing rooms, studies and offices to manage daily correspondence, periodicals and sheet music. They kept loose documents tidy while remaining accessible for reading. Larger folio stands often stood in studios or grand libraries for oversized prints and maps, whereas smaller desk tidies rested on tabletops.

How do I date a mahogany paper holder?

Dating relies on the stylistic markers of the wood, feet, handles and division shapes. Georgian and Regency pieces often feature tapered legs, brass casters and fine inlay work. Later Victorian and Edwardian versions introduce revolving mechanisms, tubular brass uprights or heavier carved waterfall profiles typical of the early 20th century.

Are these pieces suitable for modern magazines?

Yes, historic divisions built for folios and sheet music accommodate contemporary periodicals, journals and large books easily. Their sturdy timber construction suits daily practical use. Revolving stands and multi-tiered racks offer straightforward access to reading material in modern living spaces.
