What is a sorcerer mirror?

A sorcerer mirror is a curved, convex wall glass designed to capture a wide-angle reflection of an entire interior space. Historically associated with folklore, these pieces were also known as witch mirrors or butler's mirrors. They appear across Victorian, Edwardian, and nineteenth-century French designs, framed in giltwood, ebonised timber, oak, or mahogany.

Where should I hang a convex mirror?

These mirrors function best in spaces where the panoramic reflection can be appreciated, such as above a fireplace, in a hallway, or facing a window. Their wide-angle view brings light and movement into smaller rooms. Because of their optical distortion, they serve primarily as decorative focal points rather than practical glasses for checking one's appearance.

How do I date an antique convex mirror?

Dating relies on examining the frame construction, the type of wood, and the characteristics of the silvered glass plate. Victorian and nineteenth-century examples often feature heavy gesso over giltwood or ebonised surrounds with turned wooden balls. Edwardian and later twentieth-century pieces tend to show simpler framing techniques and cleaner, more uniform silvering behind the glass.

Are these mirrors fragile?

The combination of heavy wooden frames and curved glass requires secure wall fixings suited to the weight of the piece. Care should be taken to support the hanging wire or brackets properly. Cleaning involves gentle dusting of the frame and careful wiping of the glass without introducing moisture behind the silvered backing.
