What is a coffer bach?

A coffer bach is a small Welsh oak chest that typically includes a single drawer beneath the main storage compartment. These traditional pieces served domestic purposes in rural households. They display regional joinery methods and compact proportions well suited for tabletop placement.

How do I date a small chest?

Dating relies upon examining the timber species, construction methods, and hardware styles. Georgian and Victorian examples exhibit distinct drawer dovetailing and secondary woods. Comparing handles, locks, and veneer patterns against known period standards helps narrow the decade of manufacture.

How should I care for antique timber?

Antique timber benefits from stable indoor humidity and protection from direct sunlight to prevent veneer cracking. Regular dusting with a dry cloth maintains the polished surface. Application of appropriate wax preserves the natural grain and historic patina without sealing the wood.
