What is a coffer bach?

A coffer bach is a small Welsh box or chest, usually featuring a drawer beneath the main compartment and standing on feet. These pieces were traditionally used for holding valuables or domestic linens.

How were these chests used?

These boxes provided secure storage for household blankets, linens, and personal documents in domestic settings. Their sturdy tops also allowed them to function occasionally as benches or low tables.

How do I date an oak chest?

Dating relies upon examining construction methods, hinge types, tool marks, and stylistic motifs such as linen fold or panels. Earlier examples from the 17th century display pegged mortise and tenon joints without modern fasteners.

Where did small oak chests originate?

Surviving examples originate across English, Welsh, French, and Flemish domestic workshops from various historical periods. Regional styles often reveal themselves through specific carving details or the presence of drawer bases.
