How do I spot a reproduction?

Examine the interior construction, drawer linings, and the ageing of the wood surfaces. Older pieces display hand-cut joinery and natural wear patterns that modern replicas struggle to replicate. Check the uniformity of the veneer work and the materials used for the secondary woods inside the drawers.

What is the difference between marquetry and parquetry?

Marquetry involves pictorial or floral designs formed by assembling various tinted veneers into a cohesive picture. Parquetry relies on geometric patterns, such as cubes or chequers, created with repeating wood blocks. Both techniques were utilised across the 18th and 19th centuries to adorn small chests and tables.

Can I use a small marquetry chest as a bedside table?

These compact pieces function well next to a bed to hold a lamp and small personal items. Their drawers offer convenient concealed storage for nighttime essentials. Ensure the height matches your mattress level and protect marble tops from condensation using coasters.

How should I care for antique veneer?

Keep wooden chests away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the glue beneath the veneer from drying out and lifting. Dust gently with a dry cloth and apply occasional specialist wax. Maintain stable room humidity to protect the delicate inlays from shrinking or cracking.
