What were silver mounted boxes used for originally?

These boxes served specific domestic functions in the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian household. Owners kept cigars, stamps, playing cards, jewellery and personal trinkets inside them. They sat on writing desks, smoking tables and dressing chests where their decorative mounts could be admired. Many were built to hold luxury items safely away from dust and moisture.

How do I date a silver mounted box?

Dating relies heavily on the silver hallmarks stamped onto the mounts. These marks reveal the assay office, the specific year letter and the maker's mark. Stylistic clues such as Edwardian neoclassical details or Art Deco geometric lines also help place the piece in its era.

How should I clean the silver mounts?

Silver mounts require gentle cleaning with a soft microfibre cloth to remove tarnish. Care must be taken to avoid getting polish onto the surrounding wood, leather, tortoiseshell or stone. Harsh chemical dips should be avoided entirely because they can damage organic materials and destroy patination.

Are interior linings original?

Many boxes retain their original cedar, velvet or leather linings, which show signs of age and use consistent with the exterior. Cedar linings in cigar boxes remain valued for their aromatic properties. Replacement linings occur when older fabrics have worn away completely through heavy handling.

How do I care for wooden and shell boxes?

Wooden and shell bodies benefit from stable room humidity and protection from direct sunlight. Occasional light waxing preserves the grain of woods like oak and coromandel. Tortoiseshell and mother of pearl require gentle handling to prevent surface scratching and drying out.
