How do I date a silver table mirror?

Dating relies primarily upon official hallmarks stamped into sterling silver mounts, which indicate the assay office and year of production. Stylistic markers such as Rococo Revival curves or geometric Art Deco lines also point to specific decades. Secondary clues include the construction of the wooden backing, the type of hinge used on easel supports, and the manufacturing method of the mirror glass itself.

Where should I place a plateau mirror?

Plateau mirrors traditionally sit in the centre of a dining table or sideboard to reflect decorative objects, glassware, or silver figures. They create a sense of space and amplify ambient light in a room. Ensure the surface is entirely flat to prevent strain on the mirrored glass and the underlying wooden base.

How do I clean an antique silver mirror frame?

Clean sterling silver frames gently using a specialised microfibre cloth and a mild silver polish designed to preserve antique patination. Avoid applying liquid polish directly near the mirror glass or wooden backing to prevent moisture damage. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth helps maintain the shine without requiring harsh chemical cleaning agents.
