What items belong in a complete set?

A traditional collection generally includes hand mirrors, hair brushes, clothes brushes and lidded glass dressing table jars. Additional pieces might comprise scent bottles, button hooks, shoe horns and manicure implements. Many ensembles expand to include dressing table trays, shaving sets and travelling cologne bottles housed in fitted wooden cases.

How should I clean the silver mounts?

Maintenance requires gentle cleaning with a soft microfibre cloth and a reputable silver polish formulated for antiques. Care must be taken to avoid abrasive contact with enamel, tortoiseshell or glass inserts. Stored pieces benefit from acid-free tissue paper to reduce tarnishing when kept inside original presentation boxes.

Are these sets suitable for daily use?

These historical vanity items function well for modern dressing table display and gentle everyday grooming routines. Brushes with natural bristles and sturdy glass jars remain practical for cosmetic storage. Delicate guilloche enamel and antique glass require careful handling to preserve their decorative surfaces against moisture and impact.

How do I identify the date of manufacture?

Dating relies primarily on the assay office hallmarks stamped into the sterling silver mounts and frames. These letters and symbols correspond to specific active years for makers such as Charles Boyton or Walker and Hall. Stylistic indicators, including Art Deco geometric motifs or Edwardian floral embossing, further narrow the period of creation.
