What is a cabriole table?

A cabriole table is a piece of furniture supported by legs that curve outward at the knee and inward at the ankle. These tables date from the eighteenth century onwards and include card tables, side tables, and lowboys. The form originates from classical furniture design and remains closely associated with Queen Anne and Georgian styles. They function as versatile display surfaces or functional gaming tables within domestic spaces.

How do I date a walnut table?

Dating a walnut table involves examining the construction methods, timber characteristics, and secondary woods used within the frame. Eighteenth-century examples display hand-cut joinery and aged patination, whereas twentieth-century revival pieces often utilise standardised internal fittings. Style indicators also help establish the period. Queen Anne and early Georgian pieces exhibit specific leg proportions and shell carvings that differ from Edwardian or 1920s reproductions.

Where should I place a console table?

A console table suits narrow entrance halls, living room perimeters, or dining spaces where floor space is limited. Their shallow depth allows them to sit flat against a wall while providing a surface for lamps and decorative objects. Many examples feature carved aprons or decorative cabriole legs designed to be viewed from the front. Free-standing console tables can also be positioned behind sofas.

How are card tables used?

Card tables provide a dual-purpose surface with a hinged top that unfolds to reveal a baize or timber playing area. Historically utilised for evening games, they function today as occasional tables when closed. When open, the top requires a supporting gateleg or concertina action built into the frame. They sit comfortably against walls when folded shut.
