How do I date a rococo revival frame?

Dating relies on examining the timber construction, backing boards, and the composition of the gesso layer beneath the gilding. Nineteenth-century examples often utilise machine-sawn backing timbers or specific mirror plate thicknesses that distinguish them from earlier eighteenth-century originals. Stylistic shifts also provide clues, as Victorian interpretations frequently incorporate heavier walnut or mahogany frames alongside French-influenced Louis XV revival motifs popular during the middle and late decades of the nineteenth century.

Where should I hang a large overmantel mirror?

These substantial mirrors anchor a room when positioned securely above a fireplace mantelpiece, reflecting light and creating an illusion of depth. Their generous scale demands solid wall fixings attached directly into masonry or secure studs. Purchasers also mount them above low sideboards or within hallway settings where the sweeping crests and gilded surfaces catch natural daylight from nearby windows.

Are these frames made of solid wood?

The structural carcass typically consists of timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, providing the necessary rigidity to support heavy glass plates. Many decorative elements built upon this core utilise a prepared gesso layer or moulded composition for intricate scrollwork. This combination ensured the frame remained manageable in weight while allowing artisans to achieve the deep, flowing relief characteristic of the revival movement.
