How do I hang a heavy antique mirror?

Large carved wooden frames require secure wall fixings anchored directly into masonry or heavy timber studs rather than standard plasterboard hooks. Professional mirror hanging hardware distributes the substantial weight safely across the structure. Positioning the glass at eye level ensures proper reflection while balancing the visual proportions of surrounding furniture such as a console table or mantelpiece.

What is foxing on a mirror plate?

Foxing refers to the small dark spots, mottling and aged cloudiness that develop within antique mirror plates over decades of exposure to moisture and atmospheric changes. This chemical ageing process affects the silver backing rather than the glass itself. Collectors prize genuine foxing as a definitive marker of age and authenticity, distinguishing historic mercury plates from modern manufactured glass.

How do I clean a giltwood frame?

Dusting requires a very soft, dry brush to remove particles from deep carved recesses without disturbing delicate gesso or gold leaf layers. Liquid cleaners and chemical solvents must be avoided entirely because moisture strips historic gilding. Professional restoration is recommended for structural repairs or consolidating flaking gesso surfaces on antique frames.

Are these mirrors French or Italian?

Both origins appear frequently, with French examples often following Louis XV or trumeau designs featuring refined pastoral panels or elegant crestings. Italian pieces, particularly those from Florence and Venice, tend toward extremely deep carving, elaborate crests and Murano glass elements. Distinguishing between regional workshops involves examining the wood species, the style of gesso application and the specific character of the carved scrollwork.
