How do I wire antique sconces?

Most antique sconces accommodate modern electrical wiring routed through the central fixing bracket or backplate. Qualified electricians adapt the internal channels without compromising the exterior metal or wood structure. Many pieces arrive converted for electricity while retaining their original candle tubes and drip pans. Careful installation ensures the weight of cast bronze or carved wood is securely anchored to wall studs.

How should I clean gilded surfaces?

Dust gilded wood and metal gently using a dry, soft brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid commercial metal cleaners or abrasive liquids that strip delicate gold leaf or remove historic patination. Preserving the fragile surface layer maintains the visual depth built up over centuries. Professional conservation is advisable for deep cleaning or repairing flaking gesso.

Are eighteenth century and revival pieces different?

Eighteenth-century originals display hand-chased metalwork and period construction methods unique to their era. Nineteenth and twentieth-century revival pieces emulate these rococo forms utilising contemporary foundry and carving techniques. Both categories offer decorative presence, though period pieces carry greater historical weight and material rarity.

Where should I mount wall sconces?

Sconces look effective flanking mirrors, fireplaces or large artworks to frame focal points in a room. Height placement depends on ceiling proportions and whether the fixtures serve as primary or ambient lighting. Pairing matching sconces creates symmetry in formal reception spaces, while single pieces suit narrower wall panels or hallways.
