How do I clean bronze and ormolu candle holders?

Dust the metal gently with a soft dry cloth to remove surface particles without disturbing the finish. Avoid abrasive cleaning agents or harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patination. Take care around delicate elements like porcelain inserts or marble bases during maintenance. A soft brush helps clear dust from recessed scrollwork and figural details.

Were these candle holders electrified later?

Retaining untouched candle pans remains common among collectors who prefer pure period configuration.

How do I distinguish eighteenth-century pieces from nineteenth-century revivals?

Closer inspection of casting seams, tool marks, and material composition reveals the manufacturing era. Stylistic markers often align with Napoleon III or Victorian periods rather than authentic eighteenth-century output. Comparing the weight and chasing quality provides further context for dating.

Where should I place multi-branch candelabra in a room?

Large multi-arm candelabra function effectively on mantelpieces, sideboards, or large tables where their height commands visual balance. Wall sconces require secure mounting to support the substantial weight of cast bronze and marble. Keep them away from direct foot traffic where accidental bumps might dislodge heavy bases or hanging lustres. Positioning them away from drafts ensures even burning if utilised with actual candles.
