How do I clean a brass fire screen?

Dust the metal gently with a soft, dry cloth to prevent the accumulation of soot and grime. Avoid abrasive polishes that can strip away original gilding or historical patination from the brass surface.

Are these screens safe to use with an active fire?

Many of these pieces function primarily as decorative spark guards or summer panels when the hearth is empty. Check the integrity of the mesh and the stability of the frame before exposing the screen to intense heat.

How do I distinguish French revival pieces from later copies?

Examine the weight of the metal, the method of assembly, and the hand-finished details within the cast scrollwork. Nineteenth-century examples often exhibit heavier cast brass and more varied patination compared to twentieth-century reproductions.

What is the difference between a fire screen and a fire guard?

A fire screen often serves a dual purpose as an ornamental panel and a radiant heat blocker during quiet evenings. A fire guard is typically built specifically to enclose the opening of the hearth and contain stray embers.
