What is the difference between a chiffonier and a side cabinet?

A chiffonier typically incorporates a raised superstructure with shelves or a mirror above a low base unit. Side cabinets generally offer flat top surfaces, often in marble, above enclosed shelving or cupboards. Both forms served storage and display functions in Regency interiors, though chiffoniers are more frequently associated with living and dining rooms.

How do I identify a genuine Regency rosewood piece?

Genuine Regency pieces display construction methods typical of the early 19th century, including hand-cut dovetails and solid secondary timbers beneath rosewood veneers. Stylistic markers include classical columns, carved scrollwork, and brass inlay. Comparing timber ageing and joinery details helps confirm the period against later Victorian reproductions.

What woods were used alongside rosewood?

Cabinetmakers paired rosewood with contrasting light timbers such as satinwood for interior details and stringing lines. Secondary structural carcases often utilised mahogany, pine, or oak. Precious metals like ormolu and functional brass mounts were also integrated into the design.

Where should I place a rosewood cabinet in my home?

These cabinets suit principal reception rooms, studies, or hallways where their rich grain and carved details can be appreciated. Open bookcases and chiffoniers function well against plain walls that highlight their architectural silhouettes. Direct sunlight should be avoided to protect the rosewood finish from fading over time.
