How do I style a chiffonier?

Place a chiffonier against a primary wall in a dining room or drawing room to anchor the space. Use the surface for displaying decorative ceramics or small lamps while storing linens below. Allow sufficient clearance around the piece so the brass mounts and timber grain remain fully visible. Pairing them with contemporary seating creates a balanced interior contrast.

Where were these pieces used?

Original owners placed these items primarily in formal reception rooms, libraries, and withdrawing rooms. Centre tables stood in the middle of spacious apartments, while side cabinets lined the perimeter. Wall shelves and smaller bookcases functioned in intimate private studies or bedrooms. Their dual purpose of utility and display suited public domestic hosting.

Are marble tops original?

Many side cabinets and gueridon tables feature inset marble slabs designed by the original cabinet maker. These surfaces provided durable, cool areas for serving or display. Inspect the seating rebate where the stone meets the wood to understand how the top integrates. Replacement slabs occasionally occur in pieces with extensive histories.

How do I identify Regency style?

Look for clean architectural lines, classical proportions, and restrained ornamentation influenced by ancient Roman and Greek design. Brass stringing and animal-paw feet frequently appear on tables and cabinets. Timbers tend to be dark and heavily figured, with rosewood and mahogany dominating the palette. This aesthetic distinguishes the period from heavier Victorian furniture.
