How do I clean patinated bronze?

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent accumulation. Avoid chemical polishes that can strip the historic dark patina from the metal. Keep the pieces away from direct moisture and handling oils. A clean cloth is usually sufficient for ongoing maintenance.

How can I tell French Empire style pieces apart?

French Empire designs rely heavily on classical antiquity, Egyptian revival motifs, and military symbols. Look for figures like Hercules, caryatids, and structured bronze mounts. These works often combine dark patinated bronze with bright ormolu highlights. The silhouettes remain formal, symmetrical, and grand in scale.

Where were these candle holders placed historically?

They were positioned on mantelpieces, sideboards, and dining tables to provide illumination during evening hours. Paired sets often flanked clocks or mirrors to balance the room. Larger candelabra served as centrepieces for formal entertaining in nineteenth-century interiors. Smaller sticks functioned as portable lights for moving through rooms.
