Were these boxes used for tobacco?

Many of the smaller antique examples functioned specifically as snuff boxes or cigarette cases. Gentlemen carried them daily for personal tobacco use. Larger variations served different domestic roles, housing jewellery, stationery, or tea leaves.

How do I identify a Victorian piece?

Victorian examples often display characteristic mother-of-pearl inlay combined with rich black lacquer and floral painting. Examine the interior linings and hinges for period-appropriate hardware. English makers like Jennens and Bettridge frequently stamped their wares during this era.

What is Kashmiri papier mache?

Kashmiri boxes originate from regional craft traditions in India, noted for dense, colourful patterns and Millefiori designs. Artisans built these lidded pots and collection pieces using local papier-mache techniques. They offer a distinct aesthetic compared to European Victorian or Russian lacquer items.
