How do I install pair antique appliques?

Most antique wall lights require professional electrical wiring to connect safely to existing wall circuits. Secure mounting to wall studs is necessary to support the weight of heavy bronze or giltwood fixtures. Consult an electrician regarding backplate fixings and internal rewiring to ensure compliance with current safety regulations. Many historical appliques were originally designed for candles and need careful conversion for modern bulbs.

What is the difference between an applique and a sconce?

In historical and marketplace terminology, the terms are frequently used interchangeably to describe wall-mounted lighting. Applique specifically derives from the French description for applied wall ornaments. Sconces generally emphasise the functional lighting aspect, whereas appliques can encompass decorative furniture mounts that do not hold candles or bulbs.

How do I clean gilded bronze appliques?

Dust metal surfaces gently using a soft, dry brush to prevent accumulation in recessed chasing. Avoid abrasive cleaners, commercial metal polishes, and water, which can strip or damage the delicate gilt layer. Professional conservation is recommended for pieces showing significant tarnish or structural instability. Gentle maintenance preserves the historical patina accumulated over centuries.

Where should I place wall lights in a room?

Pair appliques mount effectively flanking mirrors, doorways, or fireplaces to create balanced illumination. Positioning them at eye level ensures comfortable ambient light without harsh glare. Consider the scale of the room and the projection of the arms when selecting twin or triple branch lights. Proper spacing enhances the architectural symmetry of the interior.
