What sizes do these antique beds come in?

These beds span a wide array of proportions, starting from single dimensions and narrow daybeds. Larger sleeping surfaces include double, king size, super king, and expansive emperor formats. Widths and lengths often reflect continental sizing standards from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Buyers should verify exact mattress dimensions before purchasing a frame.

How do I identify a Louis XVI style bed?

Louis XVI style bedframes typically display straight, classical lines rather than the sweeping curves of earlier periods. Look for fluted columns, geometric symmetry, and restrained carved ornamentation. In contrast, Louis XV designs favour asymmetrical cartouches and flowing cabriole shapes. Painted finishes on Louis XVI pieces often highlight architectural mouldings and parcel gilt accents.

Were these frames originally painted?

Continental workshops frequently finished wooden bedsteads with layered paint, often incorporating decorative floral motifs or portrait panels. Cream, white, and distressed pastel colours were standard practice across various provincial regions. Some pieces feature later decorative overpainting applied during subsequent decades. Original painted surfaces show natural craquelure and wear consistent with age.

Can I use a modern mattress with them?

Many antique bedframes require custom mattress sizes or adjustments to fit contemporary standard dimensions. Side irons and platform bases vary significantly across nineteenth and twentieth-century builds. Checking the internal width and length ensures modern slats or bases integrate securely. Some listings include modern support bases or require bespoke mattress commissioning.
