How do I hang bird prints together?

Arranging sets requires consistent spacing and matching frame styles to maintain visual balance on the wall. Grouping pieces from the same period helps create a cohesive display. Consider aligning the top or centre edges of the frames when hanging multiple works. This approach suits sets of prints or engravings depicting related avian subjects.

Are these works original or reproductions?

The selection includes period engravings, hand-coloured plates and original watercolours created across the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Each listing specifies the medium and estimated date of production. Examining the paper texture and ink application helps distinguish vintage plates from modern copies. Magnification often reveals the plate marks characteristic of historic printing techniques.

How should I protect framed watercolours?

Watercolour pigments on paper remain sensitive to direct sunlight and high humidity. Positioning frames away from south-facing windows prevents the colours from fading over time. Using conservation-grade glass and backing boards helps shield the paper from environmental damage. Regular checks ensure moisture does not accumulate inside the sealed frame.

What defines a natural history frame?

Natural history framing often incorporates ebonised wood or simple moulded sections that do not distract from the scientific illustration. Deep mounts provide physical separation between the delicate paper and the glass. Period frames may feature gilt fillets or slip mounts that echo the hues found within the bird's plumage. These framing choices reflect the Victorian and Edwardian approach to displaying specimen art.
