How do I secure an ornate floor mirror?

Most large leaner mirrors rely on their substantial weight and a slight backward angle against a wall for stability. Brackets or safety straps are often attached discreetly to the frame top to anchor the glass securely. Positioning the piece on a level floor ensures it rests evenly without putting undue pressure on the lower corners or frame joints.

Are these mirrors genuinely old?

The pieces originate primarily from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, featuring period construction methods such as hand-carved wood and gesso frames. Examining the backing boards, foxing in the glass, and surface wear helps confirm the age. Historical styles like Rococo Revival and French Chateau dictate the aesthetic of these antique furnishings.

How do I clean the glass safely?

Use a soft cloth and a gentle, ammonia-free glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than directly onto the mirror. This prevents moisture from seeping behind the plate and damaging the silvering. Keep liquids away from the gesso and gilt frame to protect the historic surface finishes from softening or flaking.

What is the difference between a pier and leaner mirror?

Pier mirrors were traditionally designed to fit the narrow wall space between two windows. They often sat above low console tables to maximise light reflection in nineteenth-century drawing rooms. Leaner mirrors are generally larger and taller, built to stand directly on the floor and reflect the full height of a person.
