What defines an art deco painting?

An original art deco painting reflects the design sensibilities of the nineteen-twenties and nineteen-thirties through stylised figures, clean lines, and distinct modern palettes. These works often capture fashionable society, bohemian life, or architectural landscapes of the era. Subjects range from intimate portraits of young women to vibrant still lifes and advertising designs. They embody the rapid cultural shifts occurring between the first and second world wars.

How can I date these paintings?

Dating relies on artist signatures, period inscriptions, exhibition labels, and stylistic markers inherent to the interwar decades. Many pieces carry direct dates or originate from documented working periods of the artists involved. Clothing styles, interior furnishings depicted in studio scenes, and framing materials also provide reliable chronological clues. Comparative study with archival pieces helps narrow down the exact decade of creation.

Where were these artists working?

A significant portion of these works originates from French studios, particularly in artistic quarters like Montparnasse in Paris. Other pieces stem from British regional painters and continental European creators. Artists frequently travelled across Europe, capturing Mediterranean landscapes in Provence or urban scenes in Paris. This geographic diversity creates a rich mix of regional schools within the same period.

How do I care for works on paper?

Watercolours and gouache paintings require mounting behind protective glass with acid-free materials to prevent degradation. Direct sunlight must be avoided to protect fugitive pigments from fading over time. Maintaining stable indoor humidity levels prevents warping of paper supports and protects wooden frames. Gentle handling ensures the delicate surface media remains undisturbed.
