How do tridarns and deuddarns differ?

A tridarn consists of three distinct vertical tiers, incorporating an open display canopy at the very top above a middle and lower section. A deuddarn is a two-part cupboard that omits this top open tier, providing a slightly lower and more compact profile.

Where were tridarn cupboards made?

These pieces originate from Wales, reflecting strong regional vernacular traditions in domestic furniture making. Specific extant examples trace directly to areas such as Snowdonia. Local joiners built them from native timbers to serve as principal storage and display items in country houses.

What woods were used for tridarns?

Oak serves as the primary material for the vast majority of surviving tridarn cupboards and related Welsh vernacular press cupboards. Selected rarer examples utilise yew-wood for the main construction, while iron, wrought iron and brass appear on hinges and hardware.

How do I date an antique tridarn?

Dating relies on construction methods, timber patination, stylistic details, and occasional carved dates or initials found on the facade. Seventeenth-century examples display heavier joined framing, while eighteenth-century pieces often show refined proportions. Archival listings and surviving dated pieces from 1727, 1730, 1743 and 1760 provide benchmark comparisons for style evolution.
