Do oak double wardrobes dismantle for moving?

Many period wardrobes were built to dismantle into sections, including a cornice, base, and two main sides, allowing them to be moved between rooms. Buyers should check whether a specific piece splits apart, as larger solid oak cupboards can be exceptionally heavy and difficult to manoeuvre intact.

How do I care for antique oak furniture?

Maintenance involves applying a quality beeswax periodically to nourish the dry timber and maintain a soft sheen on the surface. Keep these wardrobes away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent the solid oak from splitting or warping over time.

What is the difference between an armoire and a wardrobe?

Armoire is a traditional continental term for a large cupboard or wardrobe, often featuring deep proportions and elaborate panel carving. Wardrobes specifically designed for hanging clothes became more common in British homes during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

How can I date an oak wardrobe?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, handle styles, hinges, and decorative motifs such as linen fold or Arts and Crafts influences. Makers' labels, where present, provide the most precise confirmation of a piece's decade of origin.
