What is a military officer trunk?

A military officer trunk is a portable storage chest constructed for nineteenth-century officers on campaign. They were designed to protect uniforms and equipment during long journeys by land and sea. Today, these trunks serve as sturdy coffee tables, blanket boxes, or bedroom storage. Their rugged construction and warm timber tones suit both traditional and modern interiors.

Why is camphorwood common?

Camphorwood repels insects naturally, protecting wool uniforms and papers from moths and damp conditions during colonial service. The timber also releases a distinct aromatic scent and displays a rich grain when polished. Carpenters valued its stability in tropical climates.

Are these chests modular?

Many larger examples separate into two distinct stacking sections fitted with iron carrying handles on the sides. This modular design allowed soldiers to manage heavy loads during transit. Single-piece trunks and low chests of drawers also appear frequently. Both types retain the flush hardware necessary for packing tight spaces.

How do I date a trunk?

Dating relies on timber choice, brasswork style, and construction methods like dovetailing. Pieces marked with specific nineteenth-century regimental details or maker stamps offer clearer timelines. Victorian examples often feature heavier brass reinforcement and darker patinated camphorwood or teak. Earlier Regency pieces show lighter framing and distinct China Trade joinery.
