Where should I place a commode?

These low cabinets suit hallways, living spaces, or bedrooms where surface display space and drawer storage are both required. Their decorative veneers allow them to function as focal points against plain walls. Ensure the piece sits away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to protect the fragile wood veneers from drying and fading over time.

How do I care for wooden marquetry?

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid modern silicone polishes that can penetrate old finishes. Maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent the tiny veneer pieces from lifting. Feed the wood periodically with traditional wax polish applied sparingly and buffed gently with a clean brush or cloth.

Are marble tops original to these cabinets?

Many eighteenth and nineteenth-century continental commodes, particularly French and Italian examples, were designed and built specifically to receive fitted marble slabs. These stone tops provided durable, stain-resistant surfaces for daily use. When examining a piece, check that the marble edge profile matches the wooden moulding beneath it and sits flush within the rebates.

How do I distinguish between periods?

William and Mary pieces from the late seventeenth century often feature oyster veneers and geometric walnut banding. Later eighteenth-century Georgian and continental examples favor serpentine shapes, delicate marquetry, and Neoclassical symmetry. Nineteenth-century revival pieces emulate these earlier styles using mechanical veneer saws and denser underlying carcase timbers.
