How do I date a mahogany chest?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, timber choice and handle styles. Georgian pieces often display hand-cut dovetails and oak drawer linings, whereas later Victorian examples utilise machine-sawn elements and different locking mechanisms. Secondary woods and exterior veneers also shift across eras. Regency and George IV items frequently employ flame mahogany veneers and bold brass hardware, while Edwardian pieces show lighter framing and standardised drawer construction.

What is a brushing slide used for?

A brushing slide functions as a pull-out shelf positioned just beneath the top surface or upper drawer. Historically, individuals used this pull-out board to fold clothes or lay out personal items without opening the main drawers. These surfaces often feature leather or felt inserts on earlier Georgian and Regency models. They slide neatly back into the carcass when no longer needed.

How do I care for antique mahogany?

Maintaining antique mahogany requires stable room humidity and protection from direct sunlight to prevent the timber from fading or splitting. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth preserves the polished finish. Avoid placing these chests near radiators or heat sources. Occasional application of a suitable wax polish helps nourish the grain without building up heavy residue.

What is the difference between a tallboy and a chest on chest?

A chest on chest consists of two distinct cabinet sections stacked one on top of the other, typically providing six or more full-width drawers. The top section is slightly narrower than the base. A tallboy traditionally refers to a single tall chest of drawers or a wardrobe-style linen press elevated on legs. Both forms maximise vertical storage space.
