How do I date a linen upholstered sofa?

Dating relies upon examining the underlying frame construction, timber choices, and stylistic vocabulary, such as Louis XV curves or neoclassical symmetry. Comparing the secondary materials like hessian and webbing also provides clues to the era of manufacture. Cabinetmaking techniques and tool marks visible on the unexposed timber parts help verify whether a piece belongs to the eighteenth, nineteenth, or early twentieth century.

Are these sofas suitable for daily use?

Historic seating is generally robust enough for regular sitting, provided the internal wooden frame and support webbing remain sound and stable. Natural linen covers offer a durable, tactile surface for everyday living. Careful consideration of the seating depth and back height helps determine how a particular settee, banquette, or daybed will fit into a modern room layout.

What is the difference between a settee and a sofa?

Historically, settees often featured narrower proportions and lighter wooden frames, whereas sofas typically provided larger seating capacities with more extensive padding. Both terms appear across eighteenth and nineteenth century listings for upholstered seating. Regional naming conventions also influence these designations, with continental pieces frequently catalogued as canapes or banquettes depending on their specific form.

How should I care for antique linen upholstery?

Maintaining antique linen involves gentle surface cleaning and regular vacuuming using a low suction attachment to remove dust from the weave. Avoiding direct sunlight helps preserve the natural tone of the fabric over time. For deeper cleaning or maintenance of underlying calico and stuffing, consulting a specialist restorer ensures the historic integrity of the piece is preserved.
